Horse Leader Training
Date: Saturday, April 07, 2018 (Event Views: 1,490)

Horse Leader Training

April 7 @ 9:00 am - 11:00 am

Volunteers are the backbone of the Shepard Meadows programs. Our team of volunteers offer thousands of hours each year to help our riders and incredible herd of equines be happy, safe and reaching their goals. Volunteers work in the barn, in the arena and in our offices.

Volunteering at Shepard Meadows can take as little as 1 hour per week – or as much time as you would like to give, but we do ask for a regular commitment. This makes volunteering at Shepard Meadows ideal for high school students seeking volunteer hours for their resume or ag students for their SAE projects.

This training will familiarize volunteers with our horses, the needs of our riders, and how to become an effective horse leader in our programs.

We want you to be comfortable with us as you join our family and are committed to ensuring each volunteer receives the best training to perform their duties. Training sessions are conducted rain or shine. Please wear sturdy footwear (no open toed shoes or steel toe boots) and barn appropriate clothing.

Bristol Rotary Club's Great Pizza Challenge
Date: Sunday, April 08, 2018 (Event Views: 1,346)

The Bristol Rotary Club Great Pizza Challenge is on and pizza shops from all over the Mum City are ready to rumble.

The Club’s 3rd Great Pizza Challenge will be held on Sunday, April 8th at the Giamatti Little League Center on Mix Street in Bristol. “It is fun for the whole family,” said Rotarian Dave McAllister. “We hope that lots of people will come out to sample some of Bristol’s best pizzas.”

The event runs from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Pizza tasting is $5 per person or $20 per family, with drinks sold separately. In addition to the pizza tasting, the club will hold drawings for prizes that have been donated by local restaurants, museums, and other supportive individuals and businesses.

Proceeds from the Pizza Challenge will provide a college scholarship for a student in the InterAct Club at Bristol Central High School. In previous years, the Pizza Challenge raised $2,000 toward the scholarship. This club hopes to top that amount this year.

“The InterAct students are very excited to volunteer at the pizza challenge again this year,” said Kelly Monahan-Dinoia, a BCHS teacher who is an advisor of the InterAct Club. “They are extremely grateful for scholarship opportunities offered by their parent club.”

About 400 people attended the previous year’s Bristol Rotary Club Great Pizza Challenge. Public participation is crucial, as they will be the ones to taste and judge the pizzas. Each person who attends gets to sample pizza from many different shops and then casts a ballot, voting for the best in a slew of categories. Prizes will be awarded for Best Crust, Best Sauce, Best Meat Pizza, Best Pepperoni Pizza, Best Veggie Pizza, Best Cheese Pizza, Best Specialty Pizza, Best Gluten Free Pizza, The Rotarian (best overall pie, selected by Rotary Club members), and the President’s Prize.

“The Bristol Rotary Club is grateful for the generosity of the Giamatti Little League and the pizza shop owners. Without their support, the Great Pizza Challenge wouldn’t be possible,” said Bristol Rotary Club President Laura Watson.

Winning pizzerias will be recognized in the media, get award certificates and valuable bragging rights. Interested restaurants can register by email at RotaryWatson@gmail.com or inquire via the Bristol Rotary Club’s Facebook page.

During the early days of World War II, with the fall of France imminent, Britain faces its darkest hour as the threat of invasion looms. The fate of Western Europe hangs on the leadership of the newly-appointed British Prime Minister, Winston Churchill (Academy Award winner Gary Oldman). While maneuvering his political rivals, he must confront the ultimate choice: negotiate with Hitler and save the British people at a terrible cost or rally the nation and fight on against incredible odds.(2017)(125 min.)(PG-13)Free. 100th Anniversary of Seicheprey – Remembering Bristol’s Heroes

April 19 @ 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm

The Memorial Military Museum will present guest speaker retired Air Force Colonel Terry Finnegan who will share stories of the 73 Bristol men who left their hometown to serve in Company D, 102nd Infantry Regiment of the famous 26th “Yankee” Division. April 20-21, 1918 for 24 hours they resisted a German blitzkrieg attack during an historic battle in the ruined village of Seicheprey, France. Eight Bristol men died during those 24 hours. Every citizen in the small town of Bristol was stunned by what happened there. Bristol remembered the heroism and sacrifices by naming the American Legion SEICHEPREY Post 2, by greeting returning soldiers with parades, by erecting a monument, by naming Memorial Boulevard. 100 YEARS LATER, BRISTOL WILL GATHER TO HONOR THE MEMORY OF THOSE WHO WERE IN THE FIRST BATTLE OF MODERN WARFARE.

Horse Leader Training
Date: Saturday, April 21, 2018 (Event Views: 1,522)

Horse Leader Training

April 21 @ 9:00 am - 11:00 am

Take Care Tuesdays – Zumba with Marisa

April 24 @ 9:30 am - 10:30 am

Zumba instructor extraordinaire Marisa leads the kick off events to Take Care Tuesday – a wellness series presented by The New England Carousel Museum. Tuesday’s from 9:30-10:30 starting April 3 – May 29 (no class April 10).

Marisa Murray, licensed ZUMBA Fitness Instructor, was born to a ballerina mother in Indonesia. Though dance was in her blood, Marisa found that ballet was not for her. She began her journey in search of the dance style that best fit her which ultimately led to Zumba. Zumba classes at Valley Ballet & Dance Fitness fulfilled her passion for dance while also benefitting her health benefits in a fun and exciting way. Encouraged by others to become an instructor, Marisa found her calling.

With a BA from University of Hartford in Graphic Design and an artistic talent Marisa found Zumba instruction to be a creative outlet. Marisa’s Zumba class features energetic creative dance choreography with a focus on total fitness.
