The Explosive Child
Date: Monday, March 09, 2015 (Event Views: 1,994)

Title of Class: The Explosive Child

Class Size: 20

Topic: Parenting

Date & Time:
Mon 03/09/2015

Cost: $11.00

Description:
What’s an explosive child? A child who responds to routine problems with extreme frustration-crying, screaming, swearing, kicking, hitting, biting, spitting, destroying property, and worse. A child whose frequent, severe outbursts leave his or her parents feeling frustrated, scared, worried, and desperate for help. Most of these parents have tried everything-reasoning, explaining, punishing, sticker charts, therapy, medication-
but to no avail. They can’t figure out why their child acts the way he or she does; they wonder why the strategies that work for other kids don’t work for theirs; and they don’t know what to do instead. Based on research by Dr. Ross Greene, a distinguished clinician and pioneer in the treatment of kids with social, emotional, and behavioral challenges, this class will help parents understand that explosive kids are lacking some crucial skills in the domains of flexibility/adaptability, frustration tolerance, and problem solving, and they require a different approach to parenting. Dr. Greene’s Collaborative Problem Solving model promotes working with explosive children to solve the problems that trigger explosive episodes and teaching these kids the skills they lack.

This class will provide a new conceptual framework for understanding their difficulties, based on research in the neurosciences. This class is partially funded by grants from the Rotary Club of Bristol and the Petit Family Foundation. A sliding scale fee & scholarships are available to low-income families.

Mondays, January 26 - February 2
6 - 8 pm
$11/parent; $12/childcare provider

Program for grandparents/older adults and their Pre-K through Grade 3 grandchildren
Date: Wednesday, March 25, 2015 (Event Views: 2,060)

Come join us for a Healthy Light Supper. Enjoy Healthy Homemade soup and a puppet show. This program came about through communicating with families in Bristol. The Bristol School Readiness Council discovered that there were many grandparents in Bristol that were raising their grandchildren. They are sometimes overwhelmed because so many things have changed since they raised their own children, not only educationally, but services that are available and new research regarding brain development. (We ascertained this information at our community conversation that was held in May 2014) The School Readiness Council (SRC) and Bristol Early Childhood Alliance (BECA) Health Committee is collaborating with the Bristol Senior Center and numerous other organizations to put on this event. Our ultimate goal is to get a group of grandparents raising grandchildren and have a monthly support group for them, bringing in speakers and presentations to assist them in raising their young grandchildren. These meetings will be held at the Senior Center with the hopes they also take advantage of being a member of the Senior Center. IF you know any Bristol Resident that would benefit from this event, please make sure they are aware of it. Check out our website at makingbristolbetter.com to see more early childhood events, programs and resources.

West End Intersection Improvements - Public Meeting
Date: Tuesday, March 31, 2015 (Event Views: 1,047)

The Connecticut Department of Transportation and City of Bristol will conduct a Public Informational Meeting to discuss proposed improvements to the intersections of CT Route 69 (West Street) at CT Route 72 (Park Street & School Street) to address vehicular & pedestrian safety concerns and improve traffic operations. The Informational Meeting will be held on Tuesday, March 31st at 7 p.m. in the City Council Chambers of Bristol City Hall.

The proposed concept will realign the CT Route 69 & 72 intersection by shifting CT Route 72 to the north to provide a more conventional four-way intersection configuration. The existing Divinity Street/Park Street intersection will be eliminated and a new “T” type intersection would be formed by extending Pratt Street north to Park Street.

A plan of the proposed improvements is available for viewing in the Public Works Office on the ground floor of City Hall. The ConnDOT contact for the project is Hugh H. Hayward, Transportation Principal Engineer, at Hugh.Hayward@ct.gov, or 860-594-3219. City of Bristol contact is Walter Veselka, Public Works Director, at walterveselka@bristolct.gov or 860-584-6104.
