LAUNCH OF OPERATION: STOREFRONT ART
Date: Wednesday, April 01, 2015 (Event Views: 2,647)

ALL HEART “ART SQUAD” FORMS;
TO LAUNCH OPERATION: STOREFRONT ART APRIL 1!

March 20, 2015
Bristol’s newly minted “All Heart” brand is inspiring the formation of action groups called Heart
Squads, geared to better our City by sharing a piece of their heart and passion.
The first Squad to form is the All Heart Art Squad! The mysterious #BristolCTArtSquad is a group of talented community artists who, like stealthy cultural ninjas, have joined forces to pepper the City with Arts and culture and set the agenda on public arts projects.
“The formation of the #BristolCTArtSquad is really exciting,” said Mark Walerysiak Jr, Brand &
Marketing Manager of Bristol. “We are seeing the opportunity for community groups, these
Heart Squads, to form, bonded by the idea of allowing their heart to be the engine that allows
them to produce inspirational results for our City based on their interest. In the Art Squad’s
case, it’s visible arts projects that highlight the inherent awesomeness of art, but also stimulates community and economic growth. We’re 860% behind supporting their efforts.”
The first project by the Art Squad is Opera6on: Storefront Art being launched Wednesday April
1st, where different forms of art will be hung in vacant storefront windows across five
storefronts in Bristol as a way to:
• Promote our community’s arts & culture
• Draw attention to storefronts to help lease/sell vacant spaces
• Aesthetically improve the look of our neighborhoods
• Provide a vehicle to spread the positive All Heart culture
• Provide a fun project that stimulates community participation and tourism
Key project details:
• Start Date: Wednesday April 1st
• Project Duration: 6 weeks, concludes Friday May 15th

Comedy Night to Benefit the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation of America Greater Hartford Take Steps Walk

Southington, Connecticut – The Najarian Family of Wolcott, CT is teaming up with comedians, Mike McKenna & Claudia Stavola, to host a fundraiser to benefit the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation of America. Darcie Najarian is serving as a team captain for the Greater Hartford Take Steps Walk for Crohn’s & Colitis. Last year her team, Team Naj, raised $2,420 and her goal is to top $2,500 this year.

Team Naj was created in honor of Michael Najarian, Darcie’s son, who was diagnosed with Crohn’s disease in 2006 at the age of 16. According to Ms. Najarian, “The reason our family and friends walk is to show continued hope not only for new medications which will help control my son's Crohn’s, but for the mission we all want…to find a cure for Crohn’s Disease and Ulcerative Colitis.” Najarian went on to state, “We felt a comedy night would be a win-win. It’s a night out with family and friends, good food, and big laughs all while supporting a cause that is important.” There are 18,000 Connecticut residents living with Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis.

The Comedy Night fundraiser will be Friday, April 17 at 6:30 p.m. at the Southington Elks Lodge #1669, 114 Main Street. Tickets are $20 and are available at the Southington Elks Lodge #1669 Tap Room or by emailing, dnajarian@sbcglobal.net. Ms. Najarian, a member of the Southington Elks, states, “Thanks to the Southington Elks for donating the use of the lodge. Their generosity means 100% of the proceeds will benefit the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation.” Tickets include a pasta dinner which starts at 7:00 p.m. and the comedy show which starts at 8:00 p.m. There will be a cash bar and prize drawings throughout the evening. This is an adult’s only event.

Annual HIV/AIDS Education Forum to be hosted in Bristol

On Wednesday, April 29, the Bristol Mayor’s Task Force on HIV/AIDS will hold its annual HIV/AIDS Educational Forum for health care and social service professionals throughout Connecticut.

The Task Force, which was formed in 1991, includes a broad group of individuals and agencies all of whom are working with people affected or infected by HIV. Through education and awareness efforts citywide, they ensure that people receive information that can prevent infections and get treatment.

This year’s forum will offer 4 workshops: Shawn Lang will discuss HIV/AIDS and Aging. Gerri Ann Bradley will discuss Medical Marijuana and its use in HIV and other diseases. Richard Baraglia will facilitate a workshop with HIV positive clients discussing their own issues and concerns with regards to living with the disease. Lastly, Dr. Jonathan Kost will discuss pain management in HIV/AIDS patients, addressing concerns of handling pain in recovering addicts.

The event is being held at the Bristol Public Library at 5 High St. in Rooms 1 and 2 on the ground floor. The doors will open at 8:15 a.m. and the day will end at 3:30 p.m. A light breakfast and a catered lunch will be provided. Participants are encouraged to bring information about their agency to be displayed to foster better referrals and optimize care and services for clients living with HIV/AIDS.

As of 2011, Bristol had eighty-one residents living with HIV infection. Based on national estimates, at least another 15 people are infected but haven’t been tested.

Bristol Firefighters Union selects local charity for annual Tip a Firefighter event

BRISTOL, CT March 23, 2015 — Each year Dominic DeCarlo, Firefighter from Bristol Local 773 sets out to find a local organization to honor at the annual “Tip a Firefighter” event. For Goodness Sake, a Bristol-based not-for-profit was selected as the charity of choice this year. The fundraising event will be held on April 30, 2015 from 6:00pm until 10:00pm at Chili’s Grill & Bar located at 1425 Farmington Ave, Bristol, CT.

DeCarlo, who originated Tip a Firefighter, stated “This year marks the 5th anniversary of this event. We chose For Goodness Sake because they help those individuals who have lost everything and are now rebuilding their lives. Last year in the City of Bristol an estimated 20 families were displaced by fires. Some of the same people who have been affected by fire are also the people that get help from this organization.”

The Firefighters as well as the staff of For Goodness Sake will be joined by TV personality Scot Haney from WFSB and radio host Renee Dinino from Clear Channel/iHeart Radio. Rocky, the mascot from the Rock Cats baseball team and Sonar the Wolf, the mascot from the Wolf Pack hockey team will also be making guest appearances. There will be some great door prizes and fun for all ages.

The firefighters will spend the evening of April 30th assisting professional wait staff at Chili’s with busing tables and delivering food. All of the tips the firefighters receive that evening will be donated to For Goodness Sake. “We are so grateful to be the recipient of this years “Tip a Firefighter” efforts. We have so much respect for the work that they do in our community. For them to volunteer their free time to help us with our mission is really an honor and privilege” said Kendra Morales, Executive Director of For Goodness Sake.
