Bristol in World War I: The Yankee Division & the Battle of Seicheprey.

Date/Time
Date(s) - 08/4/2014
1:00 pm - 3:00 pm

Event Details

The First World War began 100 years ago in August in 1914. For Bristol, and the US Army, the war began in earnest on April 20, 1918 when German and American ground forces encountered each other for the first time during a German raid on the French commune of Seicheprey. In this historic battle, Bristol soldiers —members of the “Yankee” Division— were front and center. They were untested troops deployed as “sacrifice” detachments far forward of the main allied lines.

The Bristol Public Library and the Memorial Military Museum are proud to co-sponsor a presentation including the story and facts concerning the battle, a display of vintage artifacts and the personal stories of local people involved or affected by the events at Seicheprey. Hosted by City Historian and Bristol Press columnist, Bob Montgomery.

No Charge. Please Register.

Andy Warhol Birthday Bash! with Orders and Josué
Date: Wednesday, August 06, 2014 (Event Views: 2,346)

"Do you know that the Campbell’s Soup Company has not sent me a single can of soup?"

Celebrate the birthday of America's favorite pop artist with musical acts Orders and Josué. Hosted by art gallery and cafe Artist Tea Tree House, enjoy local art, delicious treats, and local folk music.

Orders infuses fuzzed out-folk in the vein of Neutral Milk Hotel and Violent Femmes with the melancholy and political consciousness of Radiohead and Bob Dylan. A trio of acoustic guitar, electric bass, and violin, Orders offers bluegrass-style intimacy with modern punch, tied together with the saccharine warble of Gardener's vocals and Tucker's complementing baritone. Listen to Orders at orders.bandcamp.com

Josué - Acoustic folk-rock reminiscent of Ray Lamontagne and Jeff Buckley.

Free Admission, tips encouraged. Event begins at 7:00 PM, music starts at 7:30. August 6th @ Artist Tea Tree House.

Cash Mob & Evening Mob Event to Descend on Clock & Watch Museum!
Date: Wednesday, August 13, 2014 (Event Views: 1,849)

Cash Mob & Evening Mob Event to Descend on Clock & Watch Museum! ! !

Set your watches, Bristol, we’re getting ready to mob a very worthy local asset!! ! Back in January Bristol Rising held a survey on who the public wanted to see receive a Cash Mob this year — a one-day event that encourages all members of the community to come and spend a minimum amount of $10 or so, to support that local business, boosting their visibility, and providing a monetary shot in the arm while keeping the dollars local. ! ! After the survey, a lottery was held providing top vote-getting establishments the best chance to receive a Mob. Three were awarded a Mob this year. West End Pizza won the ?rst, held in March, which was a success and drew statewide coverage on FOX CT and WNPR. The second organization to win a Mob was the American Clock & Watch Museum.

Bristol Rising is excited to announce that this is the very ?rst Cash Mob at a Museum in the state of Connecticut! ! ! “It’s an exciting opportunity, a great cause, and we’re thrilled for Clock & Watch!” said Bristol Rising’s Community Liaison Mark Walerysiak Jr. “We thought the mechanism of the Cash Mob and its power to boost local assets and keep dollars local lent itself perfectly to a place like the American Clock & Watch Museum, where we can pay admission and still purchase gift items, but perhaps more importantly, appreciate the amazing culture they’ve created with this awe- some chronology of clocks. It’s different than your typical mob, but in many ways, more meaningful. We hope people support them in force!” ! ! The Mob is scheduled to take place all-day Wednesday, August 13. The museum opens its doors at 10 am, and tickets will be available at the door for $6 for adults, $3 for children, and $5 for seniors (65+). All member of the community are encouraged to join the mob! The full-day support train will then make a festive conclusion with a special evening nightcap event you won’t want to miss! ! ! The Nightcap Mob Event, which will take place from 6:30 pm to 8:00 pm, plays with the theme from the popular country song “It’s Five Clock Somewhere”, only now the expression goes, No matter what time it is, it’s always Clock and Watch time!! ! Admission to the Nightcap Mob Event costs $10 for adults and $5 for children, and will provide event goers a self-guided tour of the museum, which will then funnel mobbers into a festive soiree area with a time-stopping musical performance by Bristol’s own country bumpkin Jason Garrish, who will perform a special Clock & Watch oriented song! Plus, a special tasting of a brand new to-be-unveiled beverage offering from Fire?y Brewing Co, and breakfast-brunchy menu offerings from Parkside Cafe that will further immerse Mobbers into the idea that time matters not, but Clock & Watch does! ! ! The Museum is equally excited. ! ! “It’s all so tremendous and we’re thankful for the opportunity to be mobbed by the community,” said Museum Director of Interpretation Colleen Nicastro. “We work so hard year-round in the museum, but many people still have never been, so to have crowds come and mob us, to see the gem we are and appreciate what we do, is priceless.! ! “We’re so thankful. We think people will be really impressed and have a really great time as well.”
