Teaching Your Child to Cope with Conflict
Date: Monday, December 01, 2014 (Event Views: 1,984)

Title of Class:

Teaching Your Child to Cope with Conflict

Topic: Parenting

Date & Time:
Mon 12/01/2014 (6:00 PM-8:00 PM) - Open

Cost: Free

Description:
One of the most valuable abilities a person can have is being able to cope effectively with conflict situations, by learning to express needs and wishes appropriately, negotiate fair compromises when there is a disagreement, and use respectful language while making sure that one's own needs are met. Conflict management is not an inborn talent: it is a learned skill, and children who do manage conflict effectively overwhelmingly get along better with their peers, are far less likely to be involved in bullying, and often are considered natural leaders by teachers and other students. This class will be primarily directed toward parents of preschool and school-age children.

This class is free to Bristol Families thank to Quality Enhancement Funding from the Bristol School Readiness Council. For all others $10/parent or $12/childcare provider.

To register, please call the Parent & Child Center at 860.585.3895

Bristol SEPTO Monthly Meeting
Date: Tuesday, December 02, 2014 (Event Views: 2,389)

The Bristol Special Education PTO will present The Arc Connecticut - Advocacy Workshops for parents on obtaining services from the CT Department of Developmental Services (DDS).

WORKSHOP #2: Families for Families: Creating a Better Future

How you can join with other families who are working successfully to change public policy
and create a support system that works for ALL people with I/DD.

• My child is transitioning from school into adult services, why does it I feel like we are going over a cliff? Why aren’t services guaranteed to adults with I/DD who need them?
• DDS says there is no funding for residential supports. Does that mean my child or loved one will live with me until I die? Who will be there for them after I die?
• My child or loved one has an IQ of 70 but needs supports. Why can’t we access any DDS services?

If you have a child who is facing the transition from school into adult services OR if you have an adult child who is already part of the DDS support system please come get answers to these and other questions you may have.

Please RSVP with Shannon Jacovino of The Arc Connecticut at sjacovino@thearcct.org

Bristol SEPTO will present this training on December 2nd at the Bristol Library from 6:30 to 8:00 pm. The Children's Library will be open during the training to children who are accompanied by an adult or an older sibling. Opening Art Reception - Missy Mitchell
Date: Saturday, December 20, 2014 (Event Views: 434)

MISSY MITCHELL FEATURED ARTIST AND DEVON COWLES PERFORMING LIVE MUSIC!

Come and enjoy Missy's freedom of expression and youthful exuberance! Saturday 12/20/2014 @ 7pm
Art opening Reception, Music & Christmas party at the Artist Tree Tea House.

BIO FROM THE ARTIST! MISSY MITCHELL:

"Without the support of my friends and family I, as well as my art, would be nothing; they are some inspiration for my artworks, and are usually my biggest source of motivation. I pour myself into everything I do; all of my art is representative of my struggles, as well as of my successes and all of my emotions.
I try to let my inner child take over when I paint or print so I can express the youthfulness I never gave up. My art is a testament to my passion and the love I have of my life: each piece is symbolic of some aspect of my life, and while many may never be able to decipher how, I know what each artwork means and I value them all more than anything. To me each piece is priceless; each piece was created with immense thought, intense emotion and many painstaking hours of hard work. My only goal in exhibiting my art is that it will affect others the way it has affected me, as well as be a source of beauty to those who lack it in their everyday lives. "
~MISSY
