In the First World War bibliotherapy began to be used with wounded patients. Doctors, with the help of librarians, began "prescribing from the bookshelf."

Join us for a fascinating account of “Books as Medicine: A History of Bibliotherapy,” presented by Dr. Mary-Margaret Mahoney, Andrew W. Mellon Postdoctoral Fellow in Digital Humanities at Trinity College.

Dr. Mahoney specializes the history of self-help literature, the therapeutic uses of fiction, and the practice of bibliotherapy today. Dr. Mahoney's work includes also audio stories, podcasts,and work with museums and archives to produce both physical and digital exhibits. She co-hosts the podcast American Girls which relives the American Girls series, book by book, and has been featured in the NY Times.

REMEMBER: Due to COVID concerns the Letter Carriers are asking the community to drop off donations at the Post Office on Main Street this year. Same great cause and all items collected are still used in the local community! 21,000 pounds of food & 320 turkeys collected last year. Thank you Bristol Letter Carriers!

United Way Toy Drive Collection At Farmer's Market

The United Way will be collecting NEW toys downtown at the Farmer's Market from 10am-1pm today.
Gift cards are also welcome.

The annual toy drive will continue on December 3rd, 4th, 7th and 8th at their office located at 440 North Main Street, Bristol between 9:00 am - 4:00 pm. Please drive to the upper parking lot behind Tunxis Community College downtown.

This will be a contactless event. Please have your contribution in the trunk or easy access back seat for a volunteer to collect the items.

The United Way will be distributing the toys on December 10th to local agencies and churches who have made requests on behalf of their clients and families.

Toys specifically geared towards young adults ages 11-14 are in great demand.

Store gift cards for clothing are also welcome.
